Stirland
"Hi, I'm Stirland. I grew up in the Bay Area California. My parents divorced when I was 13 and my mother moved us to Tallahassee, Florida. The cultural change from the west coast to the deep south was one that had quite an emotional impact on me and the only way for me to face many of the changes in my life was to hide, emotionally.
In high school, I was a bully. In fact, in my opinion, I was the worst sort. I made fun of and excluded the kids around me to hide the person I was, a young gay man with no guidance from the adults around me and a peer group who were just as confused about their sexuality as I was. How I wish there had been somebody to tell that young man that what he was doing was wrong and that it was OK to be who he wanted to be.
It is a privilege to be able to share my story and my path in life, so that I might be able to help other young people."
