As the year draws to a close, I thought it would be good to share some of the highlights of 2015 with you all.
It has been a huge privilege to join the DRM team while Founder and Chief Executive, Suran Dickson, is on maternity leave. We may be a small team of 7 staff, but we’re hugely passionate about what we do.
I'm delighted to report that since we began in 2011, we've now delivered over 1,450 of our workshops to more than 33,000 young people. This is a fantastic achievement, of which we’re justly proud – and it was particularly lovely to receive the Third Sector ‘Small Charity, Big Achiever’ award in September in recognition of this work.
But we recognise that there remains much more to do. We have an opportunity to change a generation of young people's attitudes; and if we could do that, maybe we could change them forever.
In April, we received funding from the Department for Education/Government Equalities Office for staff training in England, and the project is well underway. As well as expanding our existing face-to-face training, it includes an innovative e-learning resource. This means that staff will be far better equipped to tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying if it occurs in their schools, with best practice in the classroom being extended to the lunchroom and the playground.
An independent evaluation earlier in the year helped us learn about what is effective in our workshops and what we could do to improve them. We will be launching the findings early in 2016, to make the case for more schools to benefit from working with us – and particularly primary schools, given that attitudes are shaped early on.
Our volunteer role models remain at the heart of our work. Despite having a growing army of over 280 role models, we need to recruit more – particularly trans people, BAME people and parents in same-sex relationships. Please do spread the word amongst your contacts who may be looking for a volunteering opportunity in the New Year.

And if you are considering supporting a charity during this season of good will, please consider giving to Diversity Role Models.
We hope you have a fantastic festive season – and we’re looking forward to seeing you in 2016!
