Diversity Role Models is pleased to welcome the Trans Inquiry report issued today from Maria Miller MP and her colleagues on the Women and Equalities committee. It is really positive to see trans equality taken so seriously and that the committee has sought and listened to so many people’s views.
We particularly support the recommendations that focus on education and young people.
From our experience delivering workshops to eradicate homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying, we agree that more needs to be done to ensure that gender-variant young people and their families get adequate support at school. It is vital that schools more fully understand their legal obligations under the Equality Act.
We would welcome the inclusion of teaching on trans and gender issues as part of the Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum and agree that initial teacher training should include training on the protected characteristics.
By ensuring teachers and young people better understand the issues and have increased awareness of difference, we can create a more equal society in the UK, which will benefit every single one of us.
