Last year, Anti-Bullying Week really served as the starting point for my campaign for greater understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues in my school. It was a valuable opportunity as it was the first time that both staff and students saw me openly tackle homophobia in my educational environment; indeed, for many individuals, it was the first time they had heard homophobic behaviour be defined and addressed in school.

The BRIT School - Britain's only free Performing Arts and Technology School - probably isn't at the top of your list of places that needs a visit by Diversity Role Models. And you would be right, for they have a thriving LGBT group, confidential counselling for students who would like to discuss their sexuality, and a culture that celebrates diversity and inclusiveness.

To Gay or Not to Gay?

Choice around sexuality is a hot topic at the moment. Cynthia Nixon had her words blown all out of proportion by the gay media and she had to clarify that in fact, she is bisexual and has chosen to follow her feelings for her female partner. Kids often ask us 'when did you turn gay?' or 'why did you choose to be a lesbian?'.

The Department for Education must make the teaching of equality and diversity a compulsory part of the personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) syllabus, says Suran Dickson, chief executive of education charity Diversity Role Models. Dickson was commenting in response to publication today by the Government Equalities Office of a Transgender Equality Action Plan, which calls on the Department for Education to consider this addition to the syllabus.

I was lucky enough to be at the launch of Diversity Role Models last week. I was standing, in fabulous surroundings, looking around the room at all the beautiful gay people, and I thought: "Where were all these people when I was younger?" I never wanted to be a lesbian when I was growing up. Not once. I never sat in my bedroom, walls adorned with Athena posters of men gazing into the eyes of a new-born, and thought, "I wish I was a lesbian". A copywriter yes, a marine biologist once, and more often than not Madonna. But a lesbian? No. Never.
