There was no sympathy. I had friends, but they were into girls, clothes and, later on, going to raves, and it didn’t seem like me. So I spent a lot of time on my own. Being the fattest kid in the year, or maybe the school, meant I got used to laughing at myself. Before anyone else got in first. I had to. It was survival. There wasn’t a day went by, when I didn't wish I was at another school.

Like most sensible people I woke up on Saturday morning with a heavy heart following the appalling events on Friday in Paris. I believe that human beings are inherently good but I can find myself questioning this faith when human beings do dreadful things.

For many of us, our school years are some of the happiest times of our lives. But sadly for too many LGBT young people, this isn't the case. They face significantly higher levels of verbal, physical and sexual abuse, and the consequences on their mental well-being can be devastating.

Like me, many of our supporters will have seen an interesting new poll from YouGov over the weekend. It found that 49% of 18-24 year olds say they are not exclusively heterosexual. It’s undeniably a good thing that younger generations are becoming less rigid in their understanding of sexuality.

We’re inviting all our supporters to raise funds for Diversity Role Models by arranging a Picnic Against Prejudice. Whether that’s a shared picnic in a park, a BBQ in the back garden, or a meal on a blanket hiding from a summer storm in your front room, you and your guests will be helping us to tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in schools.

Leading anti-bullying charity Diversity Role Models has today delivered its 1000th workshop to tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying. Since the charity was founded in June 2011 it has reached 22,833 students with their message of acceptance and inclusivity. This includes an estimated 1,370 young LGBT people.

Former England Rugby international Ben Cohen yesterday visited The Elmgreen School in Tulse Hill, south London, to support leading anti-bullying charity Diversity Role Models (“DRM”). Year 9 students at the school were participating in DRM’s ground-breaking workshops that tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying.

Transgender Day of Visibility is held annually on March 31st and is an international event that celebrates the lives of transgender people. It’s intention is to applaud achievements of the trans community while also highlighting the many issues and prejudices we face.

Diversity Role Models and Brook have formed a consortium to deliver training to staff in schools across England to combat homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying, funded by a grant from the Government Equalities Office (“GEO”).
