Facilitators are a vital part of the educational programme. A facilitator is a trained volunteer who leads the workshop and has overall responsibility for the delivery of the workshop, liaising with school staff on the day, and managing role models.
Facilitators primarily volunteer in primary and/or secondary schools and college’s but may have the opportunity to volunteer in other settings.
Person specification
- Experience working with young people in a learning environment
- Ability to lead discussions on sensitive issues in an open and inclusive way, utilising a range of facilitation and behaviour management techniques
- Have a good and current knowledge of LGBT+ issues and terminology and the ability to translate that knowledge in a developmentally appropriate manner
- Be able to adapt to unforeseen changes and adapt your delivery to a range of audiences
- Be confident in managing other volunteers, providing support and constructive feedback
All facilitators will:
- attend an initial training session
- observe and co-deliver with an expert facilitator before being signed off to deliver independently
- be observed and given feedback annually by an expert facilitator
- be required to consent to checks on their suitability to volunteer with children, including completing a DBS check
- comply with DRM’s policies (e.g. safeguarding, volunteer)
- complete an annual update of information in line with DRM’s GDPR policy
We understand that personal or professional commitments may prohibit an individual from volunteering for periods of time, therefore we ask our volunteers to keep us updated when their circumstances will prohibit them from volunteering.
Our commitment
Diversity Role Models (DRM) is committed to developing and fostering a symbiotic relationship with facilitators.
DRM will:
- provide volunteer opportunities for the facilitator
- communicate workshop dates and requirements with as much notice as practically possible
- support facilitators through training and initial workshop delivery, refresher training and one to one support as required
- provide opportunities for engagement with other volunteers (e.g. networking and fundraising events)
- positively promote and celebrate facilitators via communications where appropriate
Facilitators have no legal status, binding obligations, or role in the management of the organisation. A facilitator or DRM has the right to terminate the volunteer agreement at any time.
